Exposing the Skeleton in the Coordination Closet

One of the ways in which we cope with large and complex systems is to abstract away some of the detail, considering them at an architectural level as compositions of interacting components. To this end, the variously termed Coordination, Configuration and Architectural Description Languages (ADL) facilitate description, comprehension and reasoning at that level, providing a clean separation bet...

The skeleton in the closet: actin cytoskeletal remodeling in β-cell function.

Over the last few decades, biomedical research has considered not only the function of single cells but also the importance of the physical environment within a whole tissue, including cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interactions. Cytoskeleton organization and focal adhesions are crucial sensors for cells that enable them to rapidly communicate with the physical extracellular environmen...

Chlamydiaphage Chp2, a skeleton in the phiX174 closet: scaffolding protein and procapsid identification.

Chlamydiaphage Chp2 is a member of the family Microviridae, of which bacteriophage phiX174 is the type species. Although grouped in the same family, the relationship between the Microviridae coliphages and the Chp2-like viruses, which infect obligate intracellular parasitic bacteria, is quite distant, with major differences in structural protein content and scaffolding protein dependence. To in...
